There are many things little Azizi has to learn about, like how the destruction of war can force people out of their homes, or take away a father in a blink. But the most important lesson of all bounces around on the frayed edges of a ball...

A Battered Ball is a contemporary adventure with roots based in the tension of tribal conflicts in Africa. It originally was published as a very tiny short story in the Writers' Stuff Multi-Genre Anthology. Later it was expanded a little and included in Tendrils. For the Quick Read book it has been fleshed out to a fuller story.

Imagine you lived in an area that was torn by civil war and you were stuck between competing forces? Imagine still, that your husband/wife is killed by one of the warring fractions? And your young children are witness to, or heard, the parent's death? How would your children respond to such horror?

I was touched by this story. The author took me by my heartstrings with vivid descriptions of the characters, her ability to express emotions in words even if they weren't actually written but appear in your mind in the form of grief, fear, and hope.

Please read this story. You will not be disappointed.

I am always amazed at how Holly can empathize with each environment she creates. It is obvious that she does research on the place time and characters. She also expresses an intuitive empathy for the emotional reality the story's experience with evoke. I have little doubt that a person who has lived through a similar situation would feel well understood when reading this.
